“Ko Panyi Traditional Long Boat Races” To Win HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s Cup 2011 At Phang-nga Provincial Administration Organisation’s Pier Phang-nga Province, Phang-nga Provinicial Administration Organisation, Ko Panyi Sub-district Administration Organisation and related agencies in the public and private sector will be organizing “Ko Panyi Traditional Long Boat Races” to win Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s Cup on the river course at Phang-nga Provincial Administration Organisation’s Pier. This competition is held for the third time with the aim to maintain the graceful tradition and culture of the people of Ko Panyi Sub-district and to promote tourism in Phang-nga Bay. “Ao Phang-nga” or Phang-nga Bay is a place not to be missed for tourists who are nature lovers. There are many attractions here; namely, Khao Phing Kan, Ko Tapu, Ko Panyi, Tham Lot, Ko Phanak, and Ko Hong. The mountainous nature is really intriguing attractive. These unusual limestone formations are the creation of nature amidst the vast and large sea, and cause a dazzling sight to be seen. Besides, the charm of the bay stays with plying tourist boats in the background of the horizon and the evening sea, which is a scenic scene. In this year’s event, the Organizing Committee has set two boat categories for the races:• large long boats with no more than 32 oarsmen• small long boats with no more than 20 oarsmen. Apart from the long boat races, which are the highlight, other festive activities include local sports competitions; such as, boats with five paddlers, paddling boats, boats with the mute-head and blind-end, canoes, kayaks, “Pris” boats, whitewater boats, a red-whiskered bulbul contest, etc. The objectives of the activities are for the people to relax from their work and to increase income from tourism of both Thai and foreign tourists during the economic slowdown. The boat races will serve as a form of public relations to attract more tourists to the area of Ko Panyi Sub-district, which will help stimulate the economy of Ko Panyi and Phang-nga Province as well. This will be also another way to increase the tourism activities of Phang-nga Province.
